According to this myth, Adonis was killed by Ares, "The God of War", Aphrodite's ex-lover. Upon his death, crimson anemones sprung in which each drop of blood and nectar fell onto the earth. Anemone, as white, then turns to red after being contaminated by Adoni's blood.
